Migrating from Squarespace to WordPress: More Design Freedom
Beautiful design, but limited options? I’ll migrate your Squarespace website to a WordPress site that grows with you—hosted in Germany and with no subscription required.
The Trigger
Common Squarespace Pain Points
The Template Corset
Squarespace templates are beautiful—until the first special request. Custom layouts, specific features, or integrations fail due to the rigid framework. In WordPress, every layout is achievable.
Server location USA
Squarespace hosts in the USA. Whether this is an issue for you depends on your data and requirements—many companies prefer a server location in Germany. With WordPress, you choose your hosting freely.
Ongoing subscription costs
As long as the website is up and running, your Squarespace subscription continues—year after year, with rising prices. With WordPress, you pay once for setup and then only for hosting.
The Decision
Squarespace vs. WordPress: A Comparison
Squarespace does a lot of things right: The templates are elegant, and the interface is uncluttered. The trade-off is a limited scope—in terms of design, functionality, and data privacy. WordPress offers the same clean look, but without the limitations of a closed platform.
| Squarespace | WordPress | |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Elegant templates, but a restrictive framework | Fully customizable—any look is possible |
| Hosting & Data Protection | Servers in the U.S., limited choice | Hosting of your choice—even in Germany |
| Ongoing Costs | Subscription model, with annual increases | Hosting only – a few euros per month |
| Features | Fixed scope, limited expandability | Huge plugin ecosystem plus custom development |
| Ownership | The website remains tied to the platform | belongs to you—including all data |
If you are satisfied with a standard template and have few special requests, you can be well-served by Squarespace. Making the switch is worth it as soon as your requirements for features, data privacy, or growth plans outgrow the template.
Scope of Services
What's Involved in Switching from Squarespace to WordPress
Content Migration from Squarespace
I import blog posts directly into WordPress using the Squarespace export feature, organized into pages and galleries—all of which are checked against the original. The design is recreated individually.
URL Structure & 301 Redirects
Every Squarespace URL will be assigned a redirect destination in the new structure—this minimizes ranking risks and preserves your backlinks, as tracked via Search Console.
Redesign with Elementor
The clean Squarespace look can be faithfully recreated in Elementor—or the migration can become a full-scale relaunch with a custom design free from the limitations of templates.
Features & Privacy-Friendly Setup
Forms, shops, newsletters, and bookings are implemented with proven WordPress solutions or custom-developed as needed – hosted in Germany upon request and set up with data privacy in mind.
Editor Training & Support
You'll learn how to manage your new website during a brief training session—with Elementor, editing remains as intuitive as ever. Afterward, I'll be available to provide ongoing support.
And many other features available upon request
Today, we can meet almost any website need based on your specific needs and requirements. Just ask us.

The Path
Here's How to Switch from Squarespace to WordPress
- 1AssessmentWeek 1I’ll review your Squarespace website—pages, blog, features, URL structure—and determine what can be carried over and what would be better addressed with a new solution.
- 2Concept & ProposalWeeks 1–2You will receive a binding proposal that clearly outlines the scope of work, the timeline, and a ‘from-to’ estimate for each work package.
- 3Development & DesignWeeks 2–6The new WordPress website is built in a protected environment – your design and templates are individually recreated in WordPress (Elementor), while your Squarespace site continues to run unchanged.
- 4Content & RedirectsWeeks 5–7Your content will be imported (blog via export, pages structured) and reviewed; every old URL will receive its 301 redirect.
- 5Go-LiveWeeks 6–8Domain switch at your desired date – if it’s with Squarespace, the transfer will be initiated in good time. This includes instruction and follow-up monitoring of rankings.
After the Launch
When to Cancel Squarespace
- 6Review PhaseWeeks 1–2Forms, emails, redirects, and Search Console are running stably, rankings are monitored.
- 7Cancel SubscriptionafterwardsOnly now do you cancel Squarespace – the domain is already with the new provider.
- 8Further DevelopmentongoingWithout template limitations: new functions and pages, whenever you need them.
Check your subscription term—often the switch can be timed to coincide with the contract end.
The Investment
How much does it cost to migrate from Squarespace to WordPress?
Migrating from Squarespace to WordPress is, technically speaking, a complete rebuild: Your content can be transferred (blog posts, for example, via a Squarespace export), but the design and templates must be recreated individually in WordPress—a Squarespace layout cannot be transferred 1:1. Pricing is therefore calculated on a case-by-case basis based on the number of pages—with a binding range estimate rather than a flat fee. Small websites with up to about ten pages start at €1,500 net.
Because your design serves as a template and the text and structure are already in place, you’ll save money compared to a completely new website—the time-consuming conceptual phase is largely eliminated, and Squarespace sites are usually compact anyway. The cost overview provides a sense of the price range (a new website starts at €2,490 net).
Especially when moving away from a template-based system, it’s often worth taking advantage of the transition to create a unique, fresh design right away—which is significantly more cost-effective than a separate relaunch later on. Plus, once you’ve made the switch, you’ll no longer have to pay Squarespace fees; you’ll only pay for hosting and the domain, and the website will belong to you.

Let's talk about your switch to Squarespace
Frequently Asked Questions About Switching from Squarespace to WordPress
Squarespace or WordPress—which is the better choice?
Squarespace is a good choice for design-oriented beginners with standard needs. WordPress excels in flexibility, features, data privacy (freedom to choose a hosting provider), and ongoing costs. For German companies with plans for growth, WordPress is the future-proof solution in most cases.
Can all content be transferred from Squarespace?
Yes—I import blog posts from Squarespace to WordPress using the Squarespace export feature, organizing them into pages and galleries; everything is checked against the original. The design and templates are recreated individually—a Squarespace layout cannot be transferred 1:1.
What will happen to our Google rankings?
Google generally re-evaluates a migrated website—fluctuations can never be completely ruled out. However, by setting up 301 redirects for every old Squarespace URL, carrying over the metadata, and monitoring the process via Google Search Console, I minimize the risk and make adjustments as needed after the site goes live.
How long does it take to migrate from Squarespace to WordPress?
Depending on the scope, this typically takes 3 to 8 weeks. Your existing Squarespace website will continue to operate without any restrictions—we’ll only switch over once the new WordPress site has been fully tested. You won’t cancel your subscription until the site has gone live successfully.
How much does it cost to switch from Squarespace to WordPress?
Starting at €1,500 net for small websites with up to about ten pages, and €2,500 to €5,000 for medium-sized websites with 10 to 30 pages and SEO migration. The migration involves a complete rebuild in WordPress: I’ll transfer the content (blog via export, pages structured), and the design and templates will be recreated individually. Since your design serves as a template and Squarespace sites are usually compact, the effort involved remains manageable; plus, you’ll save on subscription fees. You’ll receive the exact price—a binding range estimate—after the free review.
When is it better to stick with Squarespace?
If you’re completely satisfied with your template, don’t need any special features, and are comfortable with the subscription costs—then there’s no need to take action right away. It’s worth switching as soon as your specific needs can’t be met by the template, data protection requirements increase, or you want to expand your website.
